Know the Son Series: "Love and Proof" 1 John 4:17-5:13

Vrs 17 Because of the love of Jesus, we can have confidence when our day of Judgment comes.

1,Confidence in our salvation. 2. Confidence that we will be rewarded. 3. Confidence that we have a just and loving Savior.

“as He is” our standing in the world and to the world is similar to Jesus, when we love.
Think of Jesus’ reputation in the world…
One of the reasons for the Incarnation was… Jesus was an example for us.
Our chief purpose in bringing glory to God is becoming more and more like Jesus - Sanctification

Vrs 18 When we rely on Jesus’ love for our salvation there is no fear about our eternity.
Who shall we fear? Only God Luke 12:4-5
An unloving Christian experiences fear because they have the torment of guilt that they are being displeasing to God. There will be no reward for the lack of love we show others.
On the other hand we have to remember what we learned about Expiation, that is Jesus cleanses our guilt, shame and the stain of sin, so if you messed up Jesus takes care of it.

Vrs 19 Reminder, again He says Jesus first loved us. I would say this is God’s irresistible grace. When you fully understand the Love of Jesus it is almost as if you can’t help but love Him.

Vrs 20-21 If you say you love God you must love others, if you don’t you are not clinging to the truth of the Gospel. The Gospel is a call to love, remember Jesus loved us and we are said to be His enemies because of our sin. This reminds us of Propitiation, true love takes wrath on another’s behalf.

What John is saying in this passage is when a Christian loves it has eternal implications. It also shows others of their Regeneration

Vrs 1 The Gospel and now He is reminded us of the oneness of the Father and the Son

Vrs 2 Litmus test #3 How do you know you are truly showing love to fellow Christians? You are keeping the commands of Jesus, if you do that love will come through. “the law is summed up in love”

Vrs 3 “This is the love of God”… do what Jesus would do. “His commands are not burdensome” when you have a love in you for Jesus. Following Him is a joy, not a checklist of things to do. “Labor of love”

There may be joy in disobedience but the consequences of disobedience cancel it out. There is more joy in obedience and showing love to others

So how do you love? The heart of the how is “Consider others better then yourselves” Phil 2 says that is what Jesus did when HE laid down His life for us.

1. Say it, encouraging words. Eph 4 “encourage one another and build each other up” Your words have power to express love, use them wisely. With words you can make someone’s day or ruin it.
Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I will not forget you. William Arthur Ward.
Abraham Lincoln carried with him a newspaper clipping stating he was a great leader.
2. Empathize, with their situation, Author Jess Lair said Empathy is “your pain in my heart”. Galatians 6:2 “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ”
3. Practice unconditional love, Usually our love is based on conditions “but he or she did this” (women and divorce ill) Luke 6:27-36 brings us to our next point.
4. Expect nothing in return, (Letter about bunk beds) if you expect something in return you will start to resent, when you resent you will hate what started as a labor of love. Phil 2:4 “interests of others”
5. Realize the opportunity can and will be lost. If we don’t love in these ways we face regret
Alfred Lloyd Tennyson “Better to have loved and lost, then to never love at all”

Vrs 4-5 Our Faith in Jesus and His example of love will help us have victory in our live. If you practice love towards others your relationships will be better, sure there will be relationships that will still fail but at least you can rest in the fact that you have followed the law of love that Jesus told you to.

Now in the next 8 verses John gives us the reason or the proof of why Jesus can be trusted to follow…

Vrs 6 water=baptism which was Jesus’ earthly ministry. Blood=Jesus crucifixion
This was most likely refuting Cerinthus who was a teacher at that time that taught that Jesus became God at the moment of His baptism. This is not a Scriptural teaching.

Vrs 7 Trinity oneness

Vrs 8 Spirit=the scriptures prophecy about Jesus which were Holy Spirit inspired. These three agree Jesus came, He had an earthly ministry and He died in our place for our sins. Many of you who are in Community Groups learned about how Jesus fulfilled 300 prophecies. The prophesies, His work and His Death

Vrs 9 Listen if you are trusting in man, why would you not trust in God. “there is a way that seems right to man and in the end it leads to death” pro 14:12 & 16:25 They knew the law of Deut 19:15 which was accept the testimony of a person if there were two witnesses. Jesus’ testimony is greater.

Vrs 10 “witness in himself” is the Holy Spirit and the Scripture and for all those who do not trust the Scriptures are making God out to be a liar.

Vrs 11 Eternal life is only through Jesus

Vrs 12 Plain and simple without Jesus you don’t have a life

Vrs 13a “know you have eternal life” Reminder of eternal security. One of the most amazing things about Jesus is that His love Romans 8:39 “nothing can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ”

Know the Son Series: "Jesus' love reveals truth"

1 John 4:1-16 Jesus’ love reveals truth

Vrs 1 John is referring to teachers that teach error. Believers have the Holy Spirit and false teachers don’t and have evil sprits inspiring them.

Two cults right now. Jehovah’s Witnesses –Charles Taze Russell in 1874 started to doubt the Christian teachings of the Scriptures and come up with his own interpretations also believed that Jesus became a go and his teachings later led to Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Mormonism Joseph Smith in 1820 at 14yrs went out to the woods to pray and apparently Jesus and the Father stood before him and told him all the churches were wrong. And there were some special golden plates with crystal glasses that had another revelation of Jesus Christ and is now the Book of Mormon
How do we know this is a false teaching. 1. Said Jesus became a god and 2. You can also become a god

These two groups in specific will try to use God’s Word and deceive people by twisting Scriptures and to say what they want it say.

Vrs 2-3 Who is from God who is not? Those who have right theology about who Jesus is 1 Cor 15:3-4

Vrs 4 Reliance on Jesus is the secret to all victory whether it is heresy, personal problem, or struggle with sin.

Vrs 5 “They” are those who don’t believe in Jesus, they give ear to all the false teachings and promote those teachings themselves.
Satanically inspired thoughts and philosophies will always appeal to a worldly mind

Often times there is an inner conflict because those teachings do not answer their questions and they get frustrated. Rich ill His understanding did not answer the questions

The Bible does when it rains it pours two weeks ago this happened to me, it poured, but I can make sense of it because I have Jesus. I know the…
Incarnation-Jesus went through what I go through
Expiation- Jesus cleans the guilt, shame and stain of sin
Propitiation-I deserve wrath but Jesus saved me from it and took it on Himself
Sanctification- Jesus is in the process of setting me apart
Regeneration-Jesus gave me a new heart, and with that heart comes new desires and abilities.

Vrs 6 unfortunately there are spiritual blinders on people 2 Cor. 4:4 which makes it hard for them to understand the message of Jesus. Because this message is hard for them to understand they do not understand the outworking of that message in our lives.

John was speaking of believers listening to Apostles, accept the apostles teachings because they were the ones that were with Jesus.

So what can we as Christians do to help people to understand a message that they deem foolish, dated and close minded and useless? The Answer is love, in some way shape or form the word love is used 43 in this book

Vrs 7-8 As said early in our study, love is a natural outworking of our trust in Jesus, this is like a litmus test #1. The absence of love is evidence that a person does not know God
If you have a relationship Jesus, love will be a result.

Vrs 9 The Gospel is a definition of love “only begotten” carries the idea of true oneness with the father. Jesus is God.
“that we might live through Him” The gospel of Jesus effects our lives now, that is how we can love.

Vrs 10 main goal is to teach others through the example of Jesus’ love for us. We only love Him because He first loved us. Lets apply that, it is hard to love someone that shows you love? Jesus loved us when we didn’t love Him “propitiation” you deserved wrath. That is how much Jesus loved you

John Newton understood this (Amazing grace writer) “Through all my years the only two things I know is how wretched a sinner I am and how amazing the love of Jesus is”

Vrs 11 Reminder, we have been treated in a way that we don’t deserve, treat others that way as well.

Vrs 12 John 14:9b No one has ever seen the fullness of God. John 1:18 declared Him (explains Him). The way they see Jesus is through you and your love toward one another, Jesus has given us perfect love to draw on. Jesus said they will know you are my disciples if you love one another.

Vrs 13 Litmus test #2 The Spirit

Vrs 14-16 Explains this in more depth John 14:15-18

The bottom line is this…
1. Understand truth by the Holy Spirit
2. Are able to love when we understand Jesus’ love for us
3. When we are willing to love we help others understand how much Jesus loved them

Know the Son Series: "Love that hurts"

“Love that hurts” 1 John 3:16-24
Incarnation-Jesus became a man and made His dwelling among us
Expiation-Jesus’ death cleanses us from the stain of sin and guilt and shame
Propitiation-Jesus took the wrath that we deserve as sinners upon Himself
Sanctification- the process that believers experience that sets us apart from living in a sinful way
Regeneration means that God has taken away the old self and given us a new self. This does not change the fact that our fleshly sinful nature still exists and that Satan is trying to deceive

Last week we ended with the challenge what are you abiding in Eternal life or death, your regenerated heart or your old self.

Now John challenges us with the example of Jesus, how much do you love.

Vrs 16 The Greatest example of love Jesus. Description of being crucified

We also ought to lay down our lives for each other.
How do we do this? Do we die for other people?

You need to serve but you need to be served as well (fed by His word)

Vrs 17 Lets start with your possessions
Bottom line here is if you have and others need in the name of Jesus you should give.
How does this play out, most of us are unaware of the needs that others have, or realistically most people that we know really don’t have that many needs but they are merely wants.

So what are the needs of people? I would suggest most of the needs the Christians and non-Christians that we know are spiritual needs. So who is in charge of meeting spiritual needs? The Church, this is what Jesus set up to bring forth the Gospel and build up believers
When you support the church you are giving to God and His work
Why: 1. He gave to you and every time you give it reminds you what Jesus has done in your life
2. Act of worship, it is showing Jesus that you understand that He owns it all it is just on loan to you.
3. Commanded to

How:
1. first fruits, how much is that? Some teach 10% but the OT tithe is actually 23% we are under the new covenant the NT says we should give as we are prospered.
2. The N.T. teaches that we should give Generously
3. Not grudgingly or pressured
I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. C.S. Lewis.
This shows where your heart is Matt 6
Misconceptions people have and why they don’t give
-I am in debt or I can’t afford to
I have tried to keep things in my hands and lost them all, but what I have given into God's hands I still possess. Martin Luther.
-I don’t agree with what it is spent on (then you are not really giving it up to God) There is and should be accountability.
-I am young and don’t have money. The widows mite

For some strange reason people are offended when you talk about their money and I realize that, I would get offended if I walked in a room and the guy up from said my God wants some of your god and here is the plate you put that in, that is exactly the we have the giving box in the back, so people that don’t know Jesus don’t hold that against us, our heart is for you to know that Jesus is a giver.

For you who are Christians, that box should be where your worship starts, not, nice the bill collector didn’t come today lets see if I can dodge Him another week. It should be a time in which you are reminded that Jesus gave His life for you and you remember that.

If all of us make the decision to make giving a priority the more people can meet Jesus, the more people can grow to love Jesus, the more effective we can be for Jesus and we will be obeying Jesus by giving Him what is rightfully His.

Christian go home, pray, plan your giving on a weekly or monthly basis, give it and show Jesus that He is your God not your money. And this will show the love you have for Him and His work by meeting the spiritual needs of others
The bottom line is something that Hudson Taylor said. “When God's work is done in God's way for God's glory, it will never lack God's supply”. I believe that God’s work is being done here and I also believe the best is yet to come and I know the provisions will be there
Vrs 18 Talk is cheap, lets see some action and cling to what is true

Vrs 19 Last week I mentioned that a personal litmus test to know for sure if we do trust Jesus is the love we have for other Christians. Inward peace comes in our lives when we find a desire and a will to do what is right and love others.

Vrs 20- if our heart condemns us we know that God is greater then our heart and control, He is the one who regenerated our hearts so we know what is wrong.
Vrs 21 but if our heart/conscience does not condemn us or convict of us sin then we have confidence that God’s laws and standards are perfect and that He is the one who Regenerates our hearts

Oswald Chambers said
“It is easier to serve God without a vision, easier to work for God without a call, because then you are not bothered by what God requires; common sense is your guide, veneered over with Christian sentiment. You will be more prosperous and successful, more leisure-hearted, if you never realize the call of God. But if once you receive a commission from Jesus Christ, the memory of what God wants will always come like a goad; you will no longer be able to work for Him on the common-sense basis.”
Don’t listen to your reason or your heart, listen to Jesus
Vrs 22 The biblical concept that we reap what you sow, you cannot expect God to bless you if you are not keeping His commands, just because you are keeping His commands does not mean He will bless you.

So if you are asking God to bless your… marriage, dating relationship, friendships, neighbor relationship, parenting, finances, career, school work, etc
Jamison, Fausett and Brown’s Commentary says it like this. we receive--as a matter of fact, according to His promise. Believers, as such, ask only what is in accordance with God's will; or if they ask what God wills not, they bow their will to God's will, and so God grants them either their request, or something better than it.

Vrs 23 Only through Faith in Jesus can we truly love others

Vrs 24 This is how you maintain intimacy with Jesus, obedience. Only through the Holy Spirit can we abide in Him and keep His commandments

Sometimes being obedient hurts but it is worth it because it demonstrates our love toward God and those around us.

Know the Son Series: "Sin and God's Kids" 1 John 3:1-16

So far in our study of 1st John we learned about…
Incarnation-Jesus became a man and made His dwelling among us
Expiation-Jesus’ death cleanses us from the stain of sin and guilt and shame
Propitiation-Jesus took the wrath that we deserve as sinners upon Himself
Sanctification- the process that believers experience that sets us apart from living in a sinful way

Vrs 1 “Behold” This is amazing that through Jesus we can be called God’s kids Uncle Joe ill

“World” does not know us…You are a freak, an alien. The people that follow the ways of the world will not understand you, why are you nice to people that deserve to be spat upon, why do you give time and money to church, why do you sing love songs to Jesus, why do you make right choices when the right choice is harder.
The world did not know Jesus

Vrs 2 is the key to understanding that we are not perfect but when Jesus comes He will make us perfect. End Times moment, when Jesus comes back at the Rapture we will be changed, in the previous chapter John talks about His coming back.

I am convinced that the NT teaches us that a main motivation for living a life that is pleasing to God is that He will return and the End Times events are real and there are rewards to be had.

Vrs 3 When you set your hope in Jesus your heart becomes “regenerated”
Regeneration means that God has taken away the old self and given us a new self. This does not change the fact that our fleshly sinful nature still exists and that Satan is trying to deceive

O.T Ex. Ezek. 36:26 Heart of stone to heart of flesh.
Jer 31:33 God’s writing his law on the human heart In the New Testament, N.T. 2 Cor. 5:17 a new creation
Rom 6:13 being brought from death to life
1 Peter 2:9 being called out of darkness into God’s wonderful light
John 3:3 or being born again

Vrs 4 The fact that John uses “Lawlessness” here and in view of chapter 2 mention of the AntiChrist it seems reasonable that John is speaking of how the AntiChrist and antichrists soften the view of sin.
Example: Sexual purity “Old-fashioned” Porn: look but don’t touch “Adult entertainment”. Gossip: Tv shows named for it

Vrs 5 Jesus came to die for sins. Things that we laugh at, call old-fashioned, and watch as entertainment Jesus died to pay for that.

Vrs 6 Four issues
1. 1 John 1:8 everyone sins
2. “Abiding” when we are abiding we are living in obedience to Him. Jesus said in the Gospel of John “If you abide in me you will bear much fruit” So when you are abiding you are not sinning and being productive
3. Sin can never come out of seeing and knowing God. It can never be a part of the experience of abiding in Christ.
4. If we claim to be a Christian and habitual unrepentant sin is a way of life for us, others can legitimately question whether we are a Christian.

Vrs 7-8 don’t be deceived right is right and wrong is wrong, sin comes from the devil and Jesus came to destroy the sin, death and the devil

Vrs 9 John is dealing with the false notion that evil and sin and these false teachings can come from God. Now we go back to ‘regeneration” if we are living according to our regenerated heart we will not sin. But when we live according to the flesh we can.

Vrs 10 Here is how you test the teaching of a person, If they are living in right relationship with Jesus. It never surprises me that when a public preacher or teacher falls into gross sin also has bad theology. (Not always the case) God knows the heart we can only judge based on outward actions. Jesus said to Peter “get behind me Satan” I think Jesus knew that Peter was not Satan, but He also knew that Peter was acting in a way that was serving Satan rather then Jesus.

Vrs 11-12 Remember what John said in 1 John 2 Love, Cain as an example of hate

Vrs 13 Wants the worst for you, wants to destroy your character, wants to mock you Why do they hate you? 1. Jesus says because they hated Him first John 15:18 2. Because you remind them of their sinfulness 2 Cor 2:16 3. Because they are blinded 2 Cor. 4:4

Vrs 14-15 The real question here is what do you let abide in you?

Death- Dead Christians, hate other Christians, complain, criticize, are not friendly, two faced, serve for their own benefit, cause division, gossip, spend too much time worrying about certain issues and not about Jesus, are not happy for other Christians when good happens to them
What should these dead Christians do. Repent Rev 3:3 the dead church

Eternal Life- described like a fountain flowing with living water. Nothing but good comes from this. Giving, loving, helping, kind words and building up, encouraging, serving out of pure motives. Thinking how we serve Jesus better and more effectively, looking at each person as a soul the God desires to come to Jesus.
Someone from “The Five” gave them a car, that is displaying eternal life.

Live like you have eternal life because you do

Know the Son Series: "Truth over Deception" 1st John 2:15-29

Vrs 15-17 “world”=morally evil system that is opposed to God, this system is controlled and influenced by Satan.
Vrs 15 Another way that we show God we love Him is by putting Him first.

Vrs 16
“Lust of flesh”-sensual desires, We focus on pleasing our own desires rather then pleasing the desires of Jesus who has our best interests at hand.
“Lust of eyes” – material things and coveting. We focus more on building our own kingdom then the kingdom of God.
“Pride of life” – proud of ones position in the world and in the eyes of others, We focus on taking the glory for ourselves rather then doing things that bring glory to his name.

Vrs 17-Love what is eternal, and focus on the eternal, if we are consumed with the things of this life we will be unprepared for the next

If you love the world and things of the world more then you love Jesus you are allowing yourself to be trapped

Vrs 18-23 two definitions of antichrist one is any opposed to Christ and the actual figure the Antichrist.

Deception is most effective in our lives when we love “things of the world”

What are some deceptions that hit us today?

*Deceptions under the umbrella of Christianity
-Liberal Christianity-morality is all relative, whatever feels good do it, the Bible is dated and has errors, we can’t take it literally (Appeals to Lust of flesh)
-Prosperity Gospel-God wants me to have everything (Appeals to Lust of eyes)
-“Word of Faith Theology” Name it and claim it theology- we can do it if we demand it from God. (Appeals to Pride of life)
-Legalistic Christianity- These are the people that add extra stuff to the Bible (Also appeals to the pride of life) God needs me to set the standards.

*Pop culture deceptions
Start with Oprah’s suggestions—she is lost
-“The secret” by Rhonda Byrne- “Law of attraction” whatever you think will happen, if you think something will be hard it is hard, easy it will be easy. There is truth Paul says be content in all situations, the ability to do that only comes from God
A follower of the secret says “The secret gives you everything you want”

There are secrets they belong to the Lord (Deut 29:29)

“A New Earth” by Ekhart Tolle “Just think about the present because that is all you have”
If you take his advice this is the best it is gonna get,

“Only the truth of who you are, if realized will set you free” Jesus said “the truth will set you free” the truth is that only through Jesus’ death in our place can we be freed of the fact that it is impossible to please God.

- I believe in a higher power- this is the deception that drives never trusting Jesus Vrs 23
antichrists pave the road for the AntiChrist
Do you know what one of the main deceptions of the Antichrist is? in the end times that he will bring about peace.

So these New Age philosophies are just paving the way for the deception to not be recognized as deception but as something we need to accept and that will help us.

In Verse 20 there is a key on how not to be deceived “the anointing” The Holy Spirit, so through bringing these things to prayer and testing them by the Word we can know the truth

Vrs 24-27 So what do we do, cling to the truth and be reassured that God has given you the Holy Spirit (anointing)
You don’t need to be taught you need to be reminded
This is exactly the reason why each week I remind you about Jesus’ death and resurrection for your sins and mine. The basic principles of the faith are what keep us on track

Vrs 28-29 This passage sums up the text if your focus is on the fact that Jesus came and died in your place and that He is coming back and going to make all things new. You will not be deceived and side tracked by the things of this world.

Vrs 28 sick, Jesus is back and I am glad I lived for Him and not me
Vrs 29 This passage is not saying that every believer always does what is right, rather it is saying that when we practice righteousness we are declaring to others that we follow Jesus.

John can also be reminding them that only through Jesus we are declared righteous in the Fathers site.
